Industry Can't Keep Up With ACL --- October 2 1993

“As it stands, the vast majority of so-called "artificial intelligence” systems are really not intelligent at all,” says Dr Marvin Minsky, an AI expert and senior professor at MIT. “They are programs created to access libraries of information compiled by educated men, present it to the user and act as though it had itself conjured it. Meanwhile REGNAD appears to have somehow, despite the impossibility, discovered an artificial system which is truly and actually intelligent. This is a thing that is so fantastical that, if I could not look under the hood and confirm its authenticity, I would believe it to be a kind of Mechanical Turk — but there is no human mind hidden beneath the chessboard quietly pulling on the strings. I try to resist the urge to recoil at the knowledge of something so powerful and so unknown being happily brought into the homes of thousands of American families.”
